New Mid Kent NHS Treatment Centre Tops Out

Published: 25th May 2006

An exciting phase in the development of the new purpose built Treatment Centre on the Maidstone Hospital site has been celebrated with the topping out ceremony.

Formally named the Mid Kent NHS Treatment Centre, this new state-of-art building will provide dedicated facilities for day case patients and some outpatient chemotherapy procedures.  It is expected that the unit will treat up to ten thousand day patients in the first year, and provide over eight thousand chemotherapy treatments.

Planned to open for business in October this year, the next stage of the building work will be to fit out the inside of the Treatment Centre.  This project is being developed as a joint venture between Maidstone Weald Primary Care Trust, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust and Partnership Health Group (PHG).

Jane Higgins has been recently appointed as the Manager for the Treatment Centre and will be responsible for the overall running of the Centre.  Jane, who has worked in the NHS for many years, is currently a senior manager for Medway PCT where she has been closely involved with the integration of a new Independent Sector Treatment Centre into the local healthcare economy.

Some local NHS staff will be seconded from Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust into the new Treatment Centre once completed in October.

David Meikle, Chief Executive for Maidstone Weald and South West Kent PCTs said: “The Treatment Centre will provide a welcoming new environment for both patients and staff.”

Mike Hughes, Project Manager for PHG said: “We are delighted with the way the Centre is progressing.  We are dealing with some tight deadlines but progress on the building work is going well.  Anyone passing the site will see the centre taking shape rapidly.”

Rose Gibb, Chief Executive for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust said: “The New Treatment Centre offers our consultants a state-of-the-art facility in which to treat patients here in Maidstone.”

The Treatment Centre is going up on the Maidstone Hospital site right next to a new pathology and pharmacy complex, a separate project that is also under construction.
