Work starts on new hospital for Pembroke Dock

Published: 9th January 2008
The beginning of a new era in the care of the mentally ill in West Wales is under way with the turning of the first sod on Wednesday 9 January to celebrate the start of building work on a new hospital at Pembroke Dock.

Located adjacent to South Pembrokeshire hospital, the £4½ million project is being developed by Wales-based Surehaven Ltd for NHS patients.

The sixteen-bed unit will treat people between the ages of 18 and 65. There will also be an eight bed specialist unit for people with learning disabilities. The proposed developments will have staff working on a rota basis to provide 24-hour support.

Over the next five years, Surehaven Ltd of Newport will be developing a range of similar purpose-built, 16-bed hospitals for patients of working age, as well as specialist units for the over 65s.

Surehaven also plans another unit in Aberavon, and has identified other sites in North West England, the East Midlands and Scotland. Ten hospitals are planned as part of Phase One of Surehaven’s development.

Surehaven Managing Director, Keith Woodall, said: “I believe this development is urgently needed in west Wales. At present there are few specialist services in the area for people suffering from mental health problems. That means patients have to go outside the area for treatment - often outside Wales itself. That naturally adds to their concerns and those of their family.

“With this centre we can provide that care close to home. It will create jobs in the area too.”

Angela Phillips, Director of Operations and Psychological Services, said: “A range of psychological assessments and therapy services from qualified staff will be available for most emotional and behavioural difficulties. The emphasis will underpin a unique care pathway leading to the provision of future care in the least restrictive environment.”

Mr Woodall added: “The principal aim of Surehaven is to provide a specialist care service for individuals who have complex needs. These include mental health problems, learning disability, and challenging behaviour”.

“Over the next few years, we will develop a number of independent hospitals providing high-quality affordable care, bespoke treatment, and structured rehabilitation.”
