New £5 Million Hospital Opens in Pembroke Dock
A major new initiative in the treatment of those suffering from mental health problems in West Wales has begun with the opening today of a new hospital at Pembroke Dock.
The Surehaven Pembroke Hospital is a sixteen bed unit, located adjacent to South Pembrokeshire hospital. It will treat patients between the ages of 18 to 65.
The £5 million project has been developed by Newport-based, Surehaven Ltd, a subsidiary of Shaw healthcare, of St Mellons, in Cardiff.
The unit is the first of a number of similar hospitals that Surehaven will be building around Great Britain. Others are planned for Mid and North Wales, Scotland and England.
Also opening today is Martello House, a neighbouring eight-bed unit for patients with Learning Disability. It is anticipated that Martello House will also act as a “step down” centre for some patients from the hospital in preparation for community rehabilitation.
Keith Woodall, Managing Director of Surehaven, said: “Today’s opening marks the culmination of a number of years of planning. We are delighted we will soon be welcoming our first patients.
“For many years, patients and their families have been frustrated that they have had to travel long distances from West Wales to seek treatment. We know that this hospital has been urgently needed in this area for a long time and we are delighted that treatment will now be provided closer to patients’ homes.”
More than one hundred new jobs have been created in the area as a result of the project, with Surehaven working closely with the local Job Centre plus team.
A range of psychological assessments and therapy services from qualified staff will be available for most emotional and behavioural difficulties, including Huntington’s Disease and Acquired Brain Injury.
The chairman of Shaw healthcare (Homes), Philip Thomas, performed the official opening of Surehaven Pembroke Hospital, while Jeremy Nixey, chief executive of Shaw healthcare (Group) opened Martello House.
Mr Woodall added: “The principal aim of Surehaven is to provide a specialist care service for individuals who have complex needs. These include mental health problems, learning disability, and challenging behaviour”.
