Work Starts on New Hospital for Drumchapel

Published: 3rd June 2009
The beginning of a new era in the care of the mentally ill in Scotland is under way with the start of building work on a new hospital at Drumchapel, Glasgow.

Located adjacent to Drumchapel Hospital in the city, the £5 million project is being developed by Wales-based Surehaven Ltd for the benefit of NHS patients.

The sixteen-bed unit will treat people between the ages of 18 and 65. The hospital will have staff working on a rota basis to provide 24-hour support. It is expected to open in the spring of 2010 and create around 100 jobs locally, as well as providing business for local suppliers.

Surehaven opened a similar hospital at Pembroke Dock in West Wales earlier this year. Over the next five years, the company will be developing a range of similar purpose-built units for patients of working age, as well as specialist units for the over 65s. Surehaven has identified other sites in North Wales, North West England and the East Midlands.

Surehaven’s Scottish Operations Director, Ewan McLean, said: “I believe this development is urgently needed in this area of Glasgow. At present there are few specialist services in the area for people suffering from mental health problems. That means patients have to go outside the area for treatment - often outside Scotland itself. That naturally adds to their concerns and those of their family.

“With this centre we can provide that care close to home. It will create jobs in the area too.”

A range of psychological assessments and therapy services from qualified staff will be available for most emotional and behavioural difficulties. The emphasis will underpin a unique care pathway leading to the provision of future care in the least restrictive environment.

Tim Savage, Managing Director of Surehaven, said: “The principal aim of Surehaven is to provide a specialist care service for individuals who have complex needs. These include mental health problems, learning disability, and challenging behaviour”.

“Over these next few years, we are developing a number of independent units providing high-quality affordable care, bespoke treatment, and structured rehabilitation.”
