New healthcare company plans first units in the south west

A new healthcare company has been formed in the south west to provide care for people with mental health problems.

Clarus Care, based in Plymouth, expects to open two units in the city early next year. A 24-bed unit  will provide support and treatment for adults with mental health problems; the other unit, near to Plymouth city centre, will have 14 beds and be for younger people with behavioural and emotional problems.

Clarus Care takes as its approach a philosophy that believes in providing care with recovery in mind.  It will provide leisure, educational and social activities to help people to develop the appropriate coping mechanisms to help them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

The launch of the company comes as a recent Government report stressed the importance of work in tackling the problems of mental health and how most people with a mental health condition would like to be in work and pursue a career.

Clarus Care is led by managing director, Keith Woodall. Mr Woodall was formerly managing director of Surehaven, part of Shaw healthcare, that provides mental health services at units in Wales and Scotland. He is also director of Positive Placements, a healthcare consultancy which has clients in South Wales, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

Said Mr Woodall: “We are very excited about the new project which will provide the south west with a service which aims to promote self directed care for people with mental health problems and for younger people with emotional and behavioural problems.

“Our two units in Plymouth will work actively to help people build on their internal resources in order to gain control over their lives.

“There has been a substantial investment in the care facilities but we will always recognise that it is the care which is most important and I have put together an experienced team of clinicians to help me to deliver that vision”

“Our aim is to expand the organisation over the next two years moving toward more specialist care, including low secure care. We are looking forward to receiving our first client early in the new year once staff have received their full induction training.”
