New hospital prepares for service with professional open day

The start of a new era in the care of the mentally ill in Scotland is about to begin as Surehaven Glasgow prepares to open its doors to patients.
Located adjacent to Drumchapel Hospital in the city, the £5 million low secure psychiatric hospital will be holding an Open Day for medical professionals on Wednesday 5 May from 9.00 a.m. until 6.00 p.m. They will be given the chance to inspect the facilities and discuss making referrals with the Surehaven team.
Subject to full registration with the Care Commission, Surehaven Glasgow hopes to be fully open on 17 May.
The project has been developed for the benefit of NHS patients by Surehaven Ltd, part of Cardiff-based Shaw healthcare.
The seventeen-bed purpose built unit will treat men and women between the ages of 18 and 65 who are liable to be detained under the Mental Health Act. It has two gender specific wards, all with single, ensuite rooms. Twenty four hour patient centre care will be provided.
The hospital has created about 100 jobs locally, as well as providing business for local suppliers.
Surehaven opened a similar hospital at Pembroke Dock in West Wales last year. The company has plans to develop a range of similar hospitals elsewhere in the future.
Surehaven Glasgow’s Hospital Manager, Garry Walker, said: “We are now close to the start of this wonderful development which is urgently needed in Scotland.
“This establishment will save patients having to go outside the area for treatment as they often have to at present. That is an issue that naturally adds to their concerns and those of their families. We are very much looking forward to welcoming our first patients to Surehaven Glasgow.”
A range of psychological assessments and therapy services from qualified staff will be available for most emotional and behavioural difficulties. The emphasis will underpin a unique care pathway leading to the provision of future care in the least restrictive environment.
